TOKYO PHOTOGRAPHIC RESEARCH - X_CHANGE Vol.01

2024

RESIDENCY / PHOTOGRAPY / VIDEO INSTALLATION

X_CHANGE – YAU International Urban Exchange Program is a short-term residency program held at YAU STUDIO in Yurakucho, inviting artists and researchers from overseas to conduct research, production, and presentations on the theme of “survey and expression of the city.” Artists and researchers with various backgrounds and expertise, based in cities around the world, share perspectives and ideas through exchange, aiming to create international creative collaborations rich in insights on the role of art and the nature of cities in contemporary society. In March 2024, as the first installment of the X_CHANGE program, a residency and production were conducted with Dutch artist Romina Koopman. During the YAU OPEN STUDIO period, exhibitions of research outcomes and talk events were held.

Internet Ghosts

The exploration of this area com- menced online just a month ago. Through a digital odyssey, these individuals were virtually encoun- tered, captured by Google Street View within the metro station adjacent to this building. They are the internet ghosts of the working populace, possessing an elusive quality. They materialize online, only to vanish in real life, leaving behind nothing but their imprint on this wall.

Observers Peek

Surrounded by a multitude of glass towers, each boasting countless windows, this series directs attention to the windows that deny observers a glimpse inside. While windows typically serve as dynamic backdrops, akin to moving wallpapers, these have drawn their curtains.
